PlanbookEdu Tips

Off Days

Posted by Matt on Sat, Sep 03 2011

PlanbookEdu makes it easy to mark certain calendar days as Off Days.  An Off Day is any day where you don't need lesson plans.  It could be something scheduled like a vacation or field trip, or unscheduled such as a snow day.  There are two ways to add Off Days to your plans:  you can add several days at once or you can select the day right from the calendar as you are planning.

Adding Off Days

At any time you can click on "Planbooks" in the blue navigation to see a list of all your planbooks. One of the options for each planbook is "Off Days".

When you select "Off Days," you are brought to an area where you can add them.  There are two buttons: "Add Off Day" and "Add US Holidays".

Choosing "Add Off Day" will allow you to enter any time off, whether it be a single day or a range of days.

Selecting "Add US Holidays" will give you a list of the common US holidays.  You can choose not to include any by de-selecting them.

Once you are done, you will have a list of all the Off Days you've added.  You can edit or remove any of them.

Adding Off Days From the Calendar

You can add Off Days directly from the calendar while editing your plans.  Click the cog icon next to the day name.

Select "Off Day" and you can then add the reason for it. There is also an option to bump any plans for that day.  If you choose not to bump, the plans will be removed and all other plans will remain in place.

Remove Off Day

An Off Day can also be applied directly from your calendar.  Clicking on the cog icon for an Off Day will present you with a menu with just one option: Remove Off Day.

Bumping Plans

Posted by Matt on Sat, Sep 03 2011

Sometimes you need to move a single period or an entire day forward, pushing all future plans forward as well.  We call this "Bumping".

What Gets Bumped

When you bump a day, only certain types of plans get moved.  One time plans and rotations will be moved, but daily or weekly plans will not.  Schools that operate on a weekly schedule may have a class that meets every Tuesday (ex. a special such as Art or Music), that generally wouldn't be bumped to the next day.

However if you school uses a rotation then those classes would be bumped for off days and meet the following day.

Bump Entire Day

When you are on the weekly view, you'll see a cog icon next to each of the day names.  You can click on that icon to bring up a menu of options for that day.

Clicking "Bump" will immediately move all the plans for that day forward, as well as pushing any future plans forward a day.

Bump Single Period

You can bump just a single period.  Click and drag the period to the next day (as you would if you were moving and copying your plans).  In the menu that appears, there is an option to bump instead of replace the current plan.

Here is a short video showing the process.

Off Days With Bumping

If there is an unexpected day you need to bump (such as a Snow Day), you can mark that and bump at the same time.  Click on the cog icon and select "Off Day".  You can enter a reason for the Off Day, such as Snow Day, and also select the box for bumping.

Reverse Bumping

There may also be times when you want to bump your plans backwards.  You can do that as well.  From the same menu where you selected "Bump," choose "Clear Day" instead.  A menu will appear with the option to "unbump" your plans.

Undo

If you bump a day accidentally, you can undo it by clicking the "Undo" link that appears at the top of the page (below the planbook title).

Bumping Notes

  • If you've previously marked holiday and vacations using the Off Days feature, those days will be skipped when bumping.

  • Weekends or any other days that aren't part of your calendar will also be skipped when bumping.

Community Standards

Share Your Standards

When you are creating your standards you'll see one or two options that will allow you to share your standards with your school or with entire PlanbookEdu community.

Note: The option to share your standards with your group will only appear for users signed up through their school or district.

If you plan on sharing your standards we ask that you follow a common naming convention which will make it easier for others to find them.  The format is Region, Grade, Subject.  For example: New Jersey, 2nd Grade, Math. The grade can be left out for standards that aren't for a specific grade.  For example: Arizona, Algebra II.

Finding Shared Standards

Like the Common Core standards you will first need to enable Custom standards for your planbook.  You can do this when you first create your planbook or when by editing it (Planbooks -> Edit). Click the button to toggle the Custom standards.  The red X will change to a green check.

After saving your planbook click on Standards in the main navigation.  There will now be button for searching the shared standards.

When you click on that you will be able to search by email address of the person who shared the standards or by the standards name.

The results will be presented below the search box.

You can preview any of the results by clicking on the name or the preview link.

Once you have found a set of standards that you'd like to use click the "Select" link and they will be copied to your account.  Then you can edit or add to them as needed.

Note: Since you are taking a copy of the standards any changes the original author makes will not be reflected in your standards.  Likewise any changes you make will only apply to your version of the standards.

At the moment there are over 600 shared standards sets.  We hope you're able to find the standards you use, but if not you can add them using our custom standards and share them with the rest of the PlanbookEdu community.

Cubby - Drag Between Weeks

Posted by Matt on Mon, Jun 13 2011

In September 2010 we introduced the feature that made it easy to drag your plans around a week. Since then, almost daily, we've received some form of the email: "Please make it so I can drag between weeks!". We were listening, but wanted to make sure that feature was awesome before releasing. Today it's ready and it's awesome.

Introducing the Cubby

The Cubby is an area where you can drag any number of entries to be stored.  Then you can go to any week in the same planbook or a completely different planbook and drag the entry back out. Like normal dragging, the Cubby supports moving and copying.

How It Works

To begin start dragging any entry by grabbing the green arrow icon with your mouse. This is the same as you've always done to drag within a week.

On the left you will see a box slide into view. This is the Cubby.

Drag your item there and release. You will be presented with the same Copy or Move option that appears when moving a period within the week.

If you select Move the entry will be removed from your planbook and appear in the Cubby.  If you select Copy the entry will be left in your planbook as well as appearing in the Cubby.

You can drag as many entries to the Cubby as you'd like.

Cubby Tips

  • You can open and close the Cubby by clicking the blue tab.
  • If you have nothing stored in the Cubby the tab will not appear.
  • You can remove entries from the Cubby by clicking the red "X".
  • Cubby entries are stored indefinitely.  You can log out or even switch computers and they'll remain.

Standards Reporting

Posted by Matt on Mon, May 09 2011

If you include any of the standard sets on your PlanbookEdu planbook you can track which have been taught and which still need to be covered.  This feature works for our pre-defined standard sets as well as any custom standards you include.

Clicking on "Standards" in the main navigation brings you to a list of the standard sets included in your planbook.

You can click on the standard set to get a detailed report.

The red "X" means the standard hasn't been taught yet.  The green check mark means the standard has been taught, as well as showing how many times it has been covered.
